Church hosting concert to benefit tornado victims           December 7, 2011

By David Bodenheimer The Dispatch

Members of a Thomasville church are holding a benefit concert Friday night that will act as a fundraiser for victims affected by the recent tornado.

Facts Want to go? A benefit concert for victims of last month's tornado will take place from 6-9 p.m. Friday at Amazing Grace Baptist Church, 661 Light Road, Thomasville.

Elaine Forrest, a member of Amazing Grace Baptist Church, has been leading the effort to collect food and money for people who were hit the hardest by the November storm. Forrest said a total of 10 churches, including ones from Thomasville, Asheboro and Greensboro, have committed to helping.

The concert will be at 6 p.m. Friday at Amazing Grace Baptist Church at 661 Light Road. Forrest said performances will be given by church groups, adding a total of seven are scheduled to perform during the three-hour event.

Admission is free though monetary and food donations will be accepted. All monetary donations will be handed over to the American Red Cross for distribution, Forrest said. Food donations can also be made this week at the Fairgrove Resource Center, the Fairgrove Volunteer Fire Department and the Cedar Lodge Food Market.

The Fairgrove area was devastated by the tornado. The AAA Mobile Home Park, just two miles from Forrest's residence, was leveled by the twister. Though Forrest and her family were unaffected, she said the storm hit too close to home not to respond and help.

"This was just a disaster," Forrest said. "I feel like it's the church's place to reach out and help people, and our church and the surrounding community just want to lend a helping hand."
