On Saturday, June 25, 2011, FGFRC held the sixth annual Howard Hayes Fore The Families golf tournament to raise programming funds for the center.

18 teams competed for cash, longest drive, putting contest, closest to the pin and door prizes. Buck Hall, Rick Hutchinson, Robbie Pierce and Jane Baity shared the $300 first place prize with a 52 score card playoff. The second place team also shooting a 52 divided $150 in prize money. This team included Fred McClure, Joe Silver, Bill Mitchell and Charles Parnell.

The third place team winning $100 was Payne Caulder, Josh Smith, Adam Buie and Alan Buie shooting a 53. Buck Hall won two closest to the pin prizes. Jason Koontz, Dan Anthony, and Bill Scott were also closest to the pin winners. The longest drive prizes were awarded to Buck Hall and Scott McAlister. Dale Moorefield won the putting contest prize donated by the JH Adams Inn for a one night stay at their prestigious hotel combined with a $25 gift card to the Hamptons Restaurant.

A hot dog lunch with all the fixings and homemade desserts was served at 1 pm with a shotgun start at 2 pm made possible by the numerous tournament sponsors. Snacks and beverages were also served free of charge throughout the afternoon to participating golfers. Hole signs representing the businesses and individual sponsors were proudly displayed throughout the course compliments of Greggs Graphics in Thomasville. FGFRC hopes you will patronize the businesses that gave so generously to the tournament.

The weather was perfect and everyone enjoyed the comradery and competition for the many prizes while raising funds that will benefit those suffering in the Thomasville and eastern Davidson county community. The center appreciates all the hole sponsors and golfers that made this tournament a great success.

Chili Cook-off

Thomasville's annual chili cookǥoff is returning to the Chair City for its sixth year in October and the bean-talking already is well under way. The First Presbyterian Chili Cook-off will spice up Thomasville on Oct. 1 at 21 Randolph St. in what has become one of the more anticipated local events of the year. Teams from across the Piedmont put their best blends forward in hopes of capturing bragging rights as having the best chili around. In addition to the chili, entertainment will be provided by Carolina Country Grass, a Thomasville band, and Greensboro's Ladies Auxiliary Blues Group. Hot dogs, cold drinks and baked goods will be available for purchase.

In a time when donations are few and far between and area food pantries are having to do so much more with so much less, every little bit helps. In the wake of what he called the cook-off's best year yet, Phil Griffin, event founder, presented checks for $1,050 to Fairgrove Family Resource Center, His Laboring Few Ministries, Cooperative Community Ministry and St. Stephens Progressive Baptist Church. As far as need for food goes, the four organizations face an historic time of unresolved supply and demand. Terri Nelson, executive director of Fairgrove, said her organization runs out of money on a monthly basis and it's a constant struggle to simply keep bare shelves stocked with food. Emergency assistance dollars are down and FEMA funds haven't come through, adding to her struggles. Donations like the one from the chili cook-off play a huge part in helping those in need. Fairgrove is able to purchase food for 19 cents a pound at Second Harvest Food Bank, but without an increase in donations, the money just isn't there.

Luminaries

Holly Hill Memorial Park's luminary project returns for its sixth year where candles can be purchased for a special ceremony on Dec. 17 that commemorates the love of those who have passed on. Proceeds from the candle sales benefit Fairgrove Family Resource Center, Cooperative Community Ministries and Thomasville Fire Department. Berringer said there is no set price for the candles. "We've always considered this a donation," Berringer said. "It's the giver's choice. We request they give no less than $3 but it's whatever people feel comfortable giving."

All the candles will be lit on Sat. Dec. 17 at HHMP. Candles and a white flag are placed by each grave marker and are lit in unison following a prayer from a TFD chaplain. The candles burn for up to 10 hours and a loved one doesn't have to be buried at HHMP in order for someone to participate. If a loved one is buried at another cemetery, the candle will be arranged with others in the form of a cross at HHMP's entrance.

"This project allows people who want to honor their loved ones at Christmas and also support agencies who are helping people suffering in Thomasville," said Terri Nelson, executive director of FFRC. "It has been a very large fundraiser for us every year and is a fairly substantial donation. We're very concerned about being able to keep our shelves stocked to satisfy the demand this is coming in every day."
