"Fore the Families" golf tourney scheduled June 2011

by Special to the Times: Debbie Hightower

Terry Nelson of Fairgrove Family Resource Center hopes for beautiful weather at the sixth annual Fore the Families golf tournament set for Saturday, June 25, at Lexington Golf Club.

The event is named for Howard Hayes, a well-known golf enthusiast and high school coach.

Lunch is at 1 p.m. with shotgun start at 2 p.m. Last year, 18 teams participated in the popular event.

"People have had fun at the event,"said Nelson. "We have a lot of repeat golfers who come and play each year in addition to the new people."

An entry fee of $60 for an individual or $240 per team includes one mulligan, lunch, beverages, snacks and a goody bag.

The winning team will receive a $300 cash prize. Second place will get $150 and $100 will go to the third place team.

The event includes door prizes as well as prizes for closest to the pin and longest drive. A putting contest will be held.

All proceeds from the tournament will benefit programs at Fairgrove Family Resource Center.

Programs include a food pantry, emergency financial assistance, backpack program and weekly parenting classes. A clothing closet for children is provided through a partnership with Fair Grove United Methodist Church.

"Right now the economic times are so bad that in May we served a record number of folks - 1,039 people - with food," said Nelson, who added that at present it is very difficult for the resource center to maintain their food supply and emergency assistance as well as all their other programs.

Registration deadline is June 20. Make checks payable to Fairgrove Family Resource Center and mail to 219 Cedar Lodge Road, Thomasville, NC 27360.

To register or for more information, call 472-7217 or email fgfrc@northstate.net. The golf course is at 200 Country Club Blvd. in Lexington.
