Golf event to serve as fundraiser

Fore!

Fairgrove Family Resource Center (FFRC) will hold its annual "Howard Hayes: Fore the Families" golf tournament on June 25 at Lexington Golf Club. The event will begin with lunch at 1 p.m. and a shotgun start at 2.

FFRC Director Terri Nelson says the center is seeking hole sponsors for the tournament, at a time when donations are in desperate need.

"We served more than 900 clients in March alone," Nelson said. "We're working with lower dollars and triple the need. That means people who are in desperate economic situations and are no longer receiving unemployment benefits are unable to meet their monthly obligations. They depend on the center to make ends meet."

Adding to the center's struggle to help clients is the delay of FEMA money from the government.

"The economic climate in the county and the fact that FEMA hasn't released funds this year has put us in a bind," Nelson said. "We haven't even heard an anticipated date for the government to release those funds."

"January and February we saw a slight decline, but in March we were right back to where we were before. Our United Way dollars only go so far, and when that money's gone, there's no where else for us to turn to."

Sponsoring the tournament, Nelson says, is a way to engage in some friendly competition on the green while supporting a good cause.

"It's just a wonderful opportunity to enjoy an afternoon of golf and to help those suffering in their community," Nelson said. "If ever there was a time for a business to support one of our fundraisers, this is the year."

Gold level hole sponsorship, which includes a 4-person team, is $500; Silver sponsorship is $250; and bronze is $100. Other monetary donations, as well as gift certificates and prizes, also are needed.

Teams are now being formed at $60 per person or $240 per team. Cash prizes will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place. Other awards will be presented for closest-to-the-hole and longest drive.
