Classes help parent-child relationships 1/17/11

by LISA WALL

Fairgrove Family Resource Center will continue its mission of building stronger families as it begins its Parenting Wisely group sessions Thursday.

The free, eight-session program designed to address common problems parents encounter with children is held Thursday evenings at Fair Grove United Methodist Church, with dinner being served at 6 and class following at 6:45. Child care is provided.

"It addresses getting children up on time, school readiness, homework problems, reducing bedtime conflicts, sibling rivalry and other problem behaviors that parents experience on a daily basis," Terri Nelson, FGFRC director, said. "Any parent that has a child between the ages of 2 and 12 would benefit from the program because it truly focuses on common behavioral issues."

Nelson says that by concentrating on each behavioral problem individually, through visual aids and group discussions, parents are given the tools to improve their relationships with their children and strengthen their family unit as a whole.

"Parents that have completed this program in the past, will years later tell me about its effectiveness, and most importantly, its continued impact that it's had on their family," Nelson said. "There is so much less fighting and so much more cooperation among all family members. If people have made a New Year's resolution to improve their relationship with their child and to yell or argue less with their children, this program can help achieve those goals."

Registration is required and should be made by Thursday by calling 472-7217. The church is located at 138 Fair Grove Church Road in Thomasville.
